Split

Split

Split is a Mediterranean city located in the centre of Dalmatia, built around the ancient Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian, its bay and port. With a population of 178,192 citizens, and a metropolitan area numbering up to 349,314, Split is by far the largest Dalmatian city and the second-largest city of Croatia. Spread over a central peninsula and its surroundings, Split's greater area includes the neighboring seaside towns as well. As an intraregional transport hub, the city is a link to numerous Adriatic islands and the Apennine peninsula, as well as a popular tourist destination. Split is also one of the oldest cities in the area. While it is traditionally considered that the city is over 1,700 years old, counting from the construction of Diocletian's Palace in AD 305. Archaeological researches proved that the city dates from the 6th century BC as the Greek colony of Aspálathos.

We recommend spending a minimum of 3 days in the city and its area due to its big offer. The old city core is a well preserved roman palace. There are numerous restaurants, hotels and hostels in its offer. It is said that Split has the most beautiful promenade of all the Croatian cities. It has also a good offer for young adults that wish to come and party as well as sightsee. Also a very important part of Split is that it is easily reachable by plane, bus, car by highway or with ferries. As it is located in the centre of the Croatian coast it is a good starting point to head north or south.
